The independence of Saint-Domingue was proclaimed under the native name 'Haïti' by Jean-Jacques Dessalines, leader of the Haitian Revolution, on 1 January 1804. Because of him, and the efforts of other freedmen on the island, Haiti became the first country in the Americas to permanently abolish slavery and the capital and in 1804, it became the capital of newly independent Haïti.
