Founded by the Portuguese in 1549 as the first capital of Brazil, São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos is one of the oldest colonial cities in the Americas and the center of Afro-Brazilian (afrodescendente) culture. In 1888, Brazilian-born royal, Isabel, Princess Imperial of Brazil signed the Lei Áurea abolishing slavery in Brazil; it would be the last country in the Western world to do so.
